This oil-on-canvas painting was created by American painter Edwin Lord Weeks (1849-1903) ca. 1885. The painting of an Indian marketplace is a famous example of what was then called Orientalist art, scenes of the Middle and Near East. They were more apt to be based on imagination rather than actual observation. (Smithsonian)
