This oil-on-canvas painting was created by American artist Homer Dodge Martin (1836-1897) ca. 1862, during the American Civil War. It portrays the iron-ore bed in Craig Harbor near Port Henry, New York, which was a rich source of magnetite ore, important for iron production. (Smithsonian)
