This oil-on-canvas painting was created by American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) in 1865. It shows the SS United States, stranded in the Arctic ice in front of the dramatic and brilliant Northern Lights. Church was never there but based his painting on sketches from his friend, the explorer Isaac Israel Hayes.(Smithsonian)
