This undated oil-on-canvas painting was created by American genre painter Edgar Melville Ward (1839-1915). It shows a woodworker in his studio. Blockmaking was a specialized craft. Blockmakers made pulley blocks for ships of the sort shown on the worktable. (Smithsonian)
