Whaler off the Vineyard Outward Bound
This oil-on-fiberboard painting was created in 1859 by William Bradford (1823-1892). He is best known for his paintings of the Arctic but later began painting ships of New England. His home area was known for whaling. This painting shows a large whaling ship and a small schooner, with the cliffs of Gay Head, Martha’s Vineyard, in the background. (Smithsonian)
