Whirlpool Galaxy
The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as M51, has arms that Nasa calls “star-forming factories” because they compress hydrogen gas and create new stars. The arms are actually long lanes of stars and gas-laced dust. This galaxy is 31 million light-years from Earth, located in the constellation Canes Venatici. (Hubble Space Telescope)
