This image shows the starburst galaxy Messier 82 (M82), nicknamed the Cigar Galaxy and located 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. Here, stars are formed 10 times faster than in the Milky Way. These new stars cause fierce superwinds, creating the blazing plumes of glowing hydrogen gas coming out of the center of the galaxy.
NOTE: Some images are valuable historical records. To preserve their original condition, we have presented them as captured; their resolution may not be optimal for modern displays.
