69th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment
This photograph shows field and staff officers from the 69th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This all-volunteer regiment was mostly composed of working-class Irish immigrants from Philadelphia and was nicknamed “The Rock of Erin.” The unit was crucial to the defense against Pickett’s Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg. The photo was created in June 1865 by William Morris Smith.
