Maj. Gen. D. B. Birney (Union)
David Bell Birney (1825-1864) came from a Southern but strongly anti-slavery family. He entered the war with the 23rd Pennsylvania in 1861, and subsequently commanded units in the Peninsula campaign, Seven Pines, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and more. Birney died of malaria in 1864.
