Maj. Gen. “Rosy” Rosecrans succeeded McClellan at the head of the army of occupation in western Virginia. “Rosy” succeeded Gen. Pope in Mississippi and later replaced Gen. Buell. He was badly beaten at Chicamauga and was replaced by Gen. Thomas. He was then assigned to the Dept. of Missouri, where he succeeded in driving Gen. Price from the state
