Mitchell was a Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanding the 9th Div/III Corps at Perrysville, served in Nashville, and commanded the cavalry under Thomas at Chickamauga. He later commanded districts in Nebraska and Kansas. Following the war he was Governor of New Mexico.
