Benjamin Franklin "Spoons" Butler (1818-1893) commanded the Federal occupation troops in northwest New Orleans in 1862. He was much disliked by the local population for his management of the occupation and alleged slurs against the women of New Orleans. Photographed by Mathew B. Brady.
