Fort Hell
Fort Sedgwick--built along a Union siege line in Petersburg, Virginia--was generally known as “Fort Hell” because of its close proximity to Confederate batteries, making it a most likely target for the hottest fire. Its unusual construction of timber and layers of earth was intended to make it shell-proof.
Photographed ca. 1865.
