John Bell Hood (1831-1879) resigned from the U.S. Army immediately after Fort Sumter and joined the Confederate Army, where he rose in the ranks and eventually acquired the rank of general. Known to his men as “Old Wooden Head,” he had an aggressive approach to military conflict and preferred to lead from the front lines.
