Gen. Henry H. Sibley
Gen. Henry H. Sibley
In June of 1861, Gen. Sibley commanded the New Mexico expedition, capturing Albuquerque, N.M., and Tucson, Ariz. A detachment of his men fought a brief battle north of Tucson at Picacho Peak, the westernmost battle of the Civil War. Forced to retreat by Canby’s Colorado troops, Sibley and his men endured a march through trackless desert to return to Texas.
