This photograph is a studio portrait of Major Robert Anderson (1806-1871), the Union commander in charge of Fort Sumter at the start of the American Civil War in April 1861. In 1865, he returned to Fort Sumter to raise the American flag he had lowered during the surrender of 1861. This photograph was created ca. 1865.
