A group of sergeants from the 3d Massachusetts Heavy Artillery are posed around a gun and caisson in Fort Totten. Fort Totten was one of many forts that ringed Washington D.C. during the Civil War. Washington fort duty was not very rigorous, consisting mostly of drills. The army veterans usually met units that were sent from the forts to combat duty with the Army of the Potomac with scorn and ridicule.
